The “Maria Hofer Competition” integrated into the course is endowed with a total prize money of €2900. Participation is voluntary and will be discussed with the lecturers during the masterclass.

Format & repertoire2 paragraphs

Participants must prepare two pieces of their own choice - one of them by J. S. Bach - which are suitable for the competition organs in Kitzbühel (Pirchner) and Hopfgarten (Metzler).

The competition will take place in two concert rounds on Thursday in Hopfgarten (preliminary round) and Saturday in Kitzbühel (final).

Jury

The prizes are decided by the teachers together with two additional jury members; their names will be announced in good time. One of the two specialises in improvisation: that person leads the improvisation workshop during the course week and sits on the jury at the same time. The line-up changes from year to year.

After the competition

Prize winners of the Maria Hofer Organ Competition are invited to give concerts; accommodation is provided.

07 · FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Lessons & schedule

How are the lessons organised?

Active participants have daily lessons and work with all of the teachers. In addition to organ lessons there is piano and technique tuition for organists; topics such as registration and repertoire insights are covered as required.

The week is framed by concerts given by the teachers, and a joint hike offers the chance to get to know the Kitzbühel Alps.

Is there an improvisation workshop?

Yes. An improvisation workshop is part of the course week every year. It is led by an improviser who also sits on the jury of the Maria Hofer Organ Competition; the line-up changes from year to year.

The name and the date will be announced in good time.

Can I practise — and does it cost extra?

Good practice facilities are available at no additional cost.

Please ask the academy office which instruments are open for practice, how access is arranged and what practice times you can expect.

Which languages are the lessons held in?

Lessons are held in German and English. If you are not confident in either language, please contact the academy office before registering.

Clothing & equipment

What should I bring?

For preparation, it is useful to bring your own scores, organ shoes, a pencil and paper for notes. Sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing are sensible for the hike. Please ask the academy office about any binding requirements.

The course programme you prepare is already stated at registration. If you would like to record your lessons for your own use, please ask the office or your teacher beforehand.

Do I need my own organ shoes?

Your own organ shoes are customary and recommended for working at the instruments. Light shoes with a smooth leather or suede sole and a narrow but flat-surfaced heel work best; high or pointed heels make pedal playing difficult. Please ask the academy office whether bringing your own pair is a binding requirement.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing and a warm layer are recommended for everyday course activities, as churches can be cool even in July.

Please ask the academy office in advance about any binding dress requirements for the rounds of the Maria Hofer Organ Competition.

Preparation & travel

What do I need in order to register?

Using the registration form on this page you provide your contact details, your current teacher, the type of participation (active or passive) and your detailed course programme (composer, work, opus or catalogue number), and you upload your CV as a PDF (max. 10 MB). For active participation, the link to a short video of your playing is added to that.

It is best to prepare your repertoire list before you open the form.

What kind of video do I have to provide?

For active participation a short video is part of the registration: no more than 30 seconds, and a spontaneous phone video is enough. It is not about a produced recording, but about an impression of your playing.

Upload the video to YouTube (“unlisted”), Vimeo, Google Drive or Dropbox and enter only the link in the form — nothing is uploaded to us. The link must stay reachable until the end of the academy. For passive participation no video is needed.

What do I have to prepare for the competition, and how does it work?

You prepare two pieces of your own choice — one of them by J. S. Bach — that suit the competition organs in Kitzbühel (Pirchner) and Hopfgarten (Metzler). The competition takes place in two concert rounds: the preliminary round on Thursday in Hopfgarten, the final on Saturday in Kitzbühel. A work by J. S. Bach must be prepared for the final round.

Please ask the office whether you may bring your own registrant or whether one is provided, and how much warm-up time is scheduled on the competition organs.

Where do I stay, and how do I get to the instruments?

For accommodation the International Organ Academy Kitzbühel works together with KitzSki Living — modern studios and apartments with self check-in right at the Hahnenkamm cable car. Participants receive a 25% discount; we send the booking link with the discount together with the letter of acceptance. In addition, Kitzbühel Tourismus arranges individual guesthouses and hotels in Kitzbühel on request, Hinterstadt 18, 6370 Kitzbühel, T +43 5356 66660, servus@kitzbuehel.com. Book early — July is high season.

Two of the four teaching organs are in Hopfgarten and Aurach; please ask the office how travel to these venues is arranged.

More questions5 questions

Participation & registration

When does the academy take place, and by when do I have to register?

The 2027 Organ Academy takes place from Sunday 25 July to Sunday 1 August 2027 in Kitzbühel. The registration form has been open since October 2026.

There are two deadlines: registration together with payment of the registration fee by 11 July 2027, and payment of the course fee by 18 July 2027.

Who is the academy for — what level do I need?

The courses are open to professional musicians, music students and pupils. A maximum of 13 active places are available. To register, you provide your prepared course programme, upload your CV and enter the link to a short video of your playing. The active places are awarded by the artistic direction on the basis of your CV and your video. If you have questions about the entry requirements, please contact the academy office.

Those who “only” want to take part in the course are just as welcome as those who also wish to enter the Maria Hofer Organ Competition.

What is the difference between active and passive participation?

Active participants receive daily lessons — with all of the teachers — and a diploma at the end of their masterclass. Passive participation is also possible.

Please ask the academy office what passive participation includes and whether passive participants may also use the practice facilities.

What does it cost, and how do I pay?

The registration fee is € 50.00 and must be transferred to the account of the International Organ Academy Kitzbühel together with your registration (free of charge for the recipient); confirmation of registration follows once the payment has arrived. The course fee is € 300.00 and must reach the account by 18 July 2027 — otherwise participation cannot be guaranteed.

Bank details: Stadtgemeinde Kitzbühel · Sparkasse Kitzbühel · BIC SPKIAT2K · IBAN AT88 2050 5000 0001 2906. Please state the participant’s first and last name as the payment reference. The registration fee cannot be refunded if you are unable to attend or miss a deadline.

Maria Hofer Organ Competition

Do I have to take part in the Maria Hofer Organ Competition?

No. Participation is voluntary and is agreed with the teachers during the masterclass. Those who “only” want to attend the course are expressly welcome.

The competition carries total prize money of € 2,900: 1st prize € 1,200, 2nd prize € 800, 3rd prize € 500, audience prize € 400.
